vitra design museum

Based in London, renowned British designer, creative director and educator Ilse Crawford has worked on numerous commercial and residential interior design projects and serves as head of department at the Design Academy Eindhoven. For the exhibition »Home Stories«, we talked to her about her work and her vast experience in the field of interior design. For more than twenty years, Galina Balashova (b. 1931) designed the interiors for all major Soviet spacecraft and space stations.

Guided Tours – Vitra Schaudepot

The Vitra Design Museum Gallery opened in 2011, followed by Herzog & de Meuron's Vitra Schaudepot in 2016. Since 2020, Mateo Kries is director of the Vitra Design Museum, Sabrina Handler is deputy director and COO, Heiko Hoffmann is Head of Finance. For children, we offer guided tours though the current exhibition and the Vitra Campus which are specially adapted to our young guests. The participants are introduced to the theme in an entertaining way, interact with the guide and are made familiar with the huge importance of design and architecture in their everyday environment. Also many of our workshops for children and pupils include a guided tour, followed by a practical workshop under the direction of experienced teachers. The work of the Vitra Design Museum is based on its collection, which includes not only key objects of design history, but also the estates of several important design personalities.

Architecture Tours

The chair developed by Charles and Ray Eames in 1958 is considered one of the greatest furniture designs of the 20th century. Vitra has been producing this timeless classic over a period of decades in the same superior quality. Find out more about its history as well as the significance of innovation, quality and sustainability at Vitra. The guided tour focusses on the highlights from the Vitra Design Museum collection, including rare and singular pieces from designers such as Gerrit Rietveld, Alvar Aalto, Charles & Ray Eames but also less well-known or anonymous designs, rarities and prototypes.

Peter B. Lewis Building (Cleveland, Ohio)

An Installation by Sabine Marcelis« at the Vitra Schaudepot allows for fascinating cross-references between periods and styles, and provides visitors with an overwhelming immersive experience. The museum building, an architectural attraction in its own right, was Frank O. Gehry's first building in Europe, realised in cooperation with the Lörrach architect Günter Pfeifer. Together with the museum, which was originally just designed to house Rolf Fehlbaum's private collection, Gehry also built a more functional-looking production hall and a gatehouse for the close-by Vitra factory.

In "Play Parade," for example, the full range of Eames toys are available for study and for play, from the interlocking House of Cards to the lesser-known animal masks ripe for theatrical performance—there’s even a puppet stage set up for those itching for their 15 minutes of fame. Personal letters between Charles and Ray will be shown for the first time, most musing over design details or their next exploratory project. The exhibitions in the Vitra Design Museum, Vitra Schaudepot and the Vitra Design Museum Gallery can be visited independently or with guided tours.

Parallel to this, the museum initiated a highly successful system of travelling exhibitions and began to develop its own product lines to help finance the programme of cultural activities. At the same time, the museum’s collection was continually expanded and an independent publishing house was established. Alexander von Vegesack served as director of the museum from 1989 to 2010, developing it into a leading institution for design and architecture with a global reputation. Between 2011 and 2020, the museum was headed by co-directors Mateo Kries and Marc Zehntner who oversaw a significant expansion of the programme of exhibitions and events.

The Barragán Archive will be hosted by the Vitra Design Museum in new facilities designed by Dieter Thiel, located in close proximity to the Vitra Schaudepot. The Vitra Design Museum Library is a research library for design and architecture, specializing in furniture design and its influence on interior architecture from the beginning of the industrial age to the present. In addition, the library includes printed matter related to the applied arts, photography, urban planning, the humanities, and social and applied sciences. Experience different steps of the manufacturing process of the Aluminium Chair on a guided tour in the production hall of Frank Gehry.

Exhibition on the future of energy architecture to open at Vitra Design Museum

These works, originally the private collection of Rolf Fehlbaum, are now permanently on display at the newly completed Schaudepot building on the Vitra premises. In addition, the museum puts on temporary exhibitions in the main building, often with loans from other collections. In turn, parts of the collection are lent to other institutions around the world.

It’s also a completely mediated space because of Warhol’s films and all the photographers who spent time there. The architects of the new Schaudepot, Jacques Herzog und Pierre de Meuron, spoke to director Mateo Kries and Rolf Fehlbaum, Chairman Emeritus of Vitra. Exhibition curator Jolanthe Kugler and director Mateo Kries spoke with Eames Demetrios, grandson of Charles Eames and director of the Eames Office, to get to the heart of Charles and Ray Eameses' working process.

Projects by prominent architects and landscape designers – from the Garden House by Tsuyoshi Tane to the Oudolf Garten by Piet Oudolf and the »Diogene« Tiny House by Renzo Piano –  illustrate practical and contemporary ideas for a more sustainable approach to building. Join our guided tour of the Vitra Campus and discover its unique landscape and architecture. A specially trained team develops specific educational activities that are tailored to audience´s needs and enable visitors of different ages to learn about and engage with design and architecture. Our educational activities are aimed at children and young adults, as well as expert audiences, students and all design- and architecture enthusiasts. A wide-ranging programme of tours, workshops, talks and other events allows visitors to gain a deeper insight into the multifaceted field of design and architecture.

Dutch garden designer Piet Oudolf relies on perennial, often self-propagating plants, grasses, and shrubs as well as wildflowers that have long been ignored by gardeners. On this guided tour, Gardener Carola Ziereisen explains how the garden’s unconventional design matches the innovative choice of plants. She talks about developing and caring for the garden and gives helpful hints for planning one’s own garden. These interiors are about more than just domesticity, the show asserts; they were pivot points in economics, industrialization, and politics.

Experimentation was always at the core of their practice, and they took on design challenges with an obsessive fervor driven by materials. In the early 1940s, the couple poured efforts into designing a chair of a single bentwood piece. Running electricity through their invented "Kazam machine," the popular LCW was born of this failed experiment (it is two pieces, not one). In the 1950s, a new material, fiberglass, caught their attention, and they consulted a Los Angeles–based boatbuilder to make the first two prototypes of a molded chair. The second was recently found by the Henry Ford Museum, and joins the show for its first public viewing.
